Eligibility For the Health and Care Worker Visa

You must have a confirmed Job offer from the UK who is on the register of sponsors. You must also be qualified as a Doctor, Nurse, Health professional or adult social care professional and have experience.

How long you can stay

Your visa can last for up to 5 years before you need to extend it. You’ll need to apply to extend or update your visa when it expires or if you change jobs or employer.

After 5 years of residence in the United Kingdom you can apply for ILR (Settlement).

After 12 months of having Settlement, you will be entitled to apply for British Citizenship.

How long it takes to get a Health and Care Worker Visa

The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel. But due to the coronavirus, you will be allowed to apply for this in the UK whilst you are here.
You should get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks when you apply from outside the UK, it may take a little longer in the UK due to the current circumstances.

How long you can stay (Standard Health & Care Worker Visa)

You can stay for 5 years if you:

  • come to the UK on anHealth and Care Worker Visa
  • switch to this visa from another visa
  • You may be able to apply for settlement (known as ‘indefinite leave to remain’) once you’ve been in the UK for 5 years or extend as many times as you wish.

How long you can stay (New 12 Month Scheme Health & Care Worker Visa)

  • Your initial visa will be granted for 12 months
  • If the government extends the scheme you can stay for a further 12 months
  • At the end of the 12-month contract you will be able to switch to a permanent position
  • You may be able to apply for settlement (known as ‘indefinite leave to remain’) once you’ve been in the UK for 5 years or extend as many times as you wish.

What you can and cannot do

You can:

  • work in an eligible job
  • take on additional work in certain circumstances
  • do voluntary work
  • study
  • bring your partner and children with you as your ‘dependants’, if they’re eligible
  • travel abroad and return to the UK
  • apply to settle permanently in the UK (also known as ‘indefinite leave to remain’) if you’ve lived in the UK for 5 years and meet the other eligibility requirements

You cannot:

  • apply for most benefits (public funds), or the State Pension
  • change jobs or employers unless you update your visa
